SAU's student health center provides confidential care and support for your physical and mental well-being. Students will find information for on- and off-campus services and resources.
Access free, confidential care by a registered nurse. Assessments and referrals are available. Several ERs and convenient care locations near campus for after-hours emergencies. Enrolled students should complete the Student Health Form, which is available through the Experience platform. Additional physicals and tests are required for certain programs.

An emergency situation is life-threatening and calls for immediate intervention by medical personnel. We recommend the first course of action to call (911) if using a cell phone or (9-911) if using a land-based phone. From there, you will be connected to Emergency Medical Services. Insurance isn't offered at SAU. Iowa offers individual coverage, or parents can explore coverage under their plans or a health insurance marketplace or COBRA. Certain programs may have coverage requirements. Out-of-state Medicaid may apply in Iowa. Contact Student Health Services with questions.

All records are kept in strict confidence and securely stored in the Student Health Services office. No information is released without the student's permission through written consent.
In life-threatening emergencies, call 911 immediately. Administer first aid or CPR (if trained) as necessary. Contact Student Health Services at 563-333-6423 to report the emergency. Gather the patient's belongings. If necessary, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Student Affairs or hospital staff will notify the patient's family.
In non-life-threatening situations needing immediate attention, contact Student Health Services at 563-333-6423. If unavailable, call Security at 563-333-6104 or seek local healthcare/providers. If injured at work, notify supervisors, seek treatment, and report to Student Health Services.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) recommend the following vaccinations. All students should review the immunization requirements on page 1 of the health form, which is available to enrolled students in the Experience platform.
Mental health services, including counseling, therapy, and assessments, are available at SAU’s Counseling Center. We also offer referrals to off-campus mental health professionals if needed.
No. Services are available 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 1-May 31. You can always seek healthcare at other community clinics, urgent care centers, and emergency rooms.

You can pick up over-the-counter medications as well as basic medical supplies free of charge at Student Health Services, but we do not have a pharmacy on campus to refill prescription medication.
We recommend bringing a month's supply of any ongoing medication with you to campus, and bring a refill prescription with you from your healthcare provider. There is a pharmacy within walking distance from campus.
It’s important to remember that like any communicable disease, you can protect yourself and others by practicing good hygiene. If you do get sick:
Step 1: Stay at home as much as possible and away from others for at least 24 hours after your symptoms are improving and you have not had a fever and not using fever-reducing medication. You may leave your residence to pick up meals, mail, do laundry, get groceries, pick up prescriptions, see a healthcare provider or for other needs but consider wearing a mask.
People who are at higher risk for severe illness and develop symptoms should seek health care right away in order to access testing and/or treatment. Early treatment may prevent severe disease in people at higher risk, even if they are up to date with their vaccines.
Step 2: Resume normal activities and utilize prevention strategies over the next five days as identified above.
Step 3: Contact your instructors to arrange for missed assignments, exams and presentations. A note from a healthcare provider is documentation that your absence is due to illness but only the professor can excuse your absence.
