What is an Elementary Education degree?

Our Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education program focuses on providing you with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to create engaging and inclusive learning environments, meet the diverse needs of students, and promote lifelong learning and success. You’ll gain a solid foundation in the principles and theories of education, including child development, learning theories, educational psychology, and curriculum design. Our program provides experiential learning through fieldwork and practicum opportunities. You’ll learn about the different ways to teach students through communication, digital media, and integrative technology. Our instructors provide the tools to foster children’s critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills.

What you’ll learn in your Elementary Education Program

You’ll start by taking foundational courses in education. Then, you’ll pick an endorsement in language arts, mathematics, reading, science, foreign language, social studies, or special education. When you’re done, you’ll be prepared to become a fully licensed teacher in the state of Iowa.

What are the general admission requirements for a BA in Elementary Education?

Here are the admissions requirements for our Elementary Education program.

  • You must have graduated from an accredited high school or earned a GED
  • You must have a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 2.5
  • You must provide an official high school transcript

International student requirements

If you live outside of the U.S. there are different admissions requirements. Here’s what you’ll need: 

  • Official transcripts from secondary education
  • A minimum 2.5 CGPA out of a 4.0 scale, or equivalent 
  • Proof of English language proficiency (minimum scores: TOEFL - 79,  IELTS - 6.0)
  • Copy of your passport and other documentation

What are the School of Education admission requirements for a BA in Elementary Education?

We have special requirements for admittance to the School of Education. 

  • You must complete 40 field hours in EDUC 205 or provide verification through EDUC 207
  • You must provide two professional rating forms (EDUC 205 or 207 instructor, and cooperating teacher's evaluation) which show you earned an average rating of at least Developing (3) in the three separate dispositional categories and recommended by both course instructor and cooperating teacher
  • You must receive a grade of "B" or above in EDUC 205 or EDUC 207
  • You must complete the application for admission to teacher education program form (including statement of fraud section and necessary signatures)
  • You must complete EDUC 282 and EDUC 284 with at least a B average
