
Lunch and Learn: An Introduction to Brief Action Planning

Ask your next patient if they know about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in managing chronic health conditions or preventing a future injury and they will likely to speak about being physically active, eating right, getting sleep, and managing stress. While our patients know this, they may not adopt these behaviors, even after receiving education and encouragement. Brief Action Planning is a structured behavioral intervention tool to support patient self-management and facilitate change. It is ideal for patients who are open to change, but struggle to act. Brief Action Planning can be incorporated into a typical physical therapy session and takes minutes to implement. This presentation will introduce attendees to the five foundational skills of Brief Action Planning and provide a roadmap to integration into clinical practice.

Dr. Michael Puthoff is a physical therapist and Professor in the St. Ambrose University Physical Therapy Department, Davenport, Iowa. He completed his physical therapy training at Marquette University and received his PhD in Physical Rehabilitation Science at the University of Iowa. He teaches courses in exercise physiology, health and wellness, cardiopulmonary therapeutics and the management of aging adults. His scholarship interests are the implementation of mobility and fitness screens with aging adults and physical therapy management of individuals with venous thromboembolism. Puthoff has clinical experience in the acute care, intensive care unit, skilled nursing, and outpatient settings. He serves as the clinic director for the St. Ambrose University Interprofessional Health Clinic.
This is a FREE virtual continuing education hour hosted by the St. Ambrose University Physical Therapy Department and will occur via Teams on Thursday, October 16, 2025, 12:00PM - 1:00PM (Central).
