About this Event

An Introduction to Brief Action Planning – A Roadmap to Guide Lifestyle Changes Across Practice Settings

Course Description:

Ask your next patient if they know about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in managing chronic health conditions or preventing a future injury and they will likely to speak about being physically active, eating right, getting sleep, and managing stress. While our patients know this, they may not adopt these behaviors, even after receiving education and encouragement. Brief Action Planning is a structured behavioral intervention tool to support patient self-management and facilitate change. It is ideal for patients who are open to change, but struggle to act. Brief Action Planning can be incorporated into a typical physical therapy session and takes minutes to implement. This presentation will introduce attendees to the five foundational skills of Brief Action Planning and provide a roadmap to integration into clinical practice.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Define Brief Action Planning and Motivational Interviewing.
  2. List the five foundational skills of Brief Action Planning.
  3. Use the Physical Activity Vital Sign to begin a conversation about behavior change.
  4. Identify resources to support implementing Brief Action Planning into clinical practice.
