The St. Ambrose University Chorale and Chamber Singers are pleased to present their winter concert, featuring music by African-American composers and arrangers, including a significant number of spirituals. This music, particularly the genre of African-American spirituals, represents the pinnacle of American choral music, but it is often relegated to singular works at the end of a concert, despite its rich and complicated history with the practice of slavery in nineteenth-century America.
Join us as we share contemporary choral settings, music infused with Gospel and World traditions, as well as a selection of wonderful spirituals, all celebrating the rich contribution that African-American composers and poets have made to music and culture.
