Summer Camps Spark Interest and Intellect

03/06/2018

Students entering grades 3-12 this fall can broaden their skills and take part in active, hands-on experiences this summer at St. Ambrose University.

SAU will offer 12 summer camps this year, all specifically designed by SAU professors to spark the interest and intellect of students from across the region. Offerings include Model UN, mock trial, health sciences camp, creative writing and piano camp.

Four of the camps are new this year: Paper to Pixels will help high school artists build their portfolio; International Business Workshop will teach high school students about forces that affect business through lectures and company visits; Robotics Exploration will immerse 4th and 5th graders in LEGO Mindstorms and NXT robot; and an Engineering Boot Camp will allow high schoolers to explore engineering fields in-depth.

Jodi Prosise PhD, associate professor and chair of the Engineering Department, said the new engineering camps are a way to reach, and inspire, a broader age-range of students.

"We want to give more students the opportunity to start thinking like an engineer, to use their creativity and problem solve," she said. "We are looking forward to having youth on campus this summer and showing them how exciting engineering is."

Students who sign up for Engineering Boot Camp will learn how to use equipment in SAU's engineering labs, including the Prototyping Lab and Design Center which has a 3D printer and scanner.

All of the camps will give students the chance to experience a college classroom, and two-- Model UN and Human Body Workshop-- will introduce students to the experience of living on a college campus. Both are all-day, overnight camps.
