The movie follows the annual meeting of the Scott County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) at 6 p.m. The movie and meeting are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided and reservations are required. Continuing education units are available.

“Canvas” tells the story of a 10-year-old boy whose mother is schizophrenic and whose father is struggling to cope with her mental illness. The internationally acclaimed 1997 film was written and directed by Joseph Greco and is rated PG-13.

‘Canvas’ is a serious film about mental illness and a sentimental heart-warmer—and succeeds in both ways,” says film critic Roger Ebert. “The portrayal of schizophrenia in the film has been praised by mental health experts as unusually accurate and sympathetic.”

Reservations are required by June 8 and may be made by leaving a message at 563/322-6247, ext. 224, with the number of people who will be attending.
