Education Design Showcase has named the renovation of St. Ambrose University’s Christ the King Chapel a 2008 “Project of Distinction Winner.”
The renewal—which was part redesign, part restoration and part expansion—provides worship space designed for today’s best liturgical practices. In addition, a large gathering area was created; lighting, sound and environmental controls were modernized; the roof was replaced; and the chapel was made physically accessible to all. Since 1953, the chapel has been the physical symbol of the university’s Catholic heritage and values.
“The renewal of Christ the King Chapel is a prayer come true,” says St. Ambrose’s chaplain, Rev. Charles Adam. “Changes in the chapel place greater emphasis on the congregation, the people as the body of Christ. It truly is the ‘soul’ of our university.”
Education Design Showcase shares “innovative yet practical solutions—based on research and best practice—in planning, design and construction,” according to their Web site.
