One of this month's First-Year Focus articles is about Andrés Garcia. Technically, Andrés is a sophomore, but this is his first year performing in a show with SAU's Theatre Department! He was part of the ensemble of Big Fish earlier this year and will be in The Shape of Things as Phillip coming up very soon! So, enjoy reading more about Andrés and seeing more of him in the future!
Garcia came to St. Ambrose from Rockford, IL, and was originally a computer science major. Recently however, he decided to add theatre as a second major!
When asked about his history with theatre, he said, "I started doing theatre later in high school - my junior or senior year. I just wanted to try something new and ended up falling in love with it. I had so much fun performing and learning new things in a new atmosphere."
In high school, he performed in shows such as West Side Story and Singin' in the Rain. At St. Ambrose, he has performed in Big Fish and the one-act, Beyond the White Noise. He will also be in the upcoming Studio Theatre production of The Shape of Things. Beyond what he's done before, Garcia said his dream role is Usnavi from In the Heights.
Still, he does more than act. He recently earned a spot on SAU's tech team, which made its way to compete at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Sioux Falls, SD, this year. While they did not bring home the Golden C-Wrench this year, Garcia is hopeful for a victory next year.
Regardless, Garcia will undoubtedly leave a huge impact on St. Ambrose University. The Department has loved working with him and looks forward to the two years ahead where he will continue his legacy as a reliable and talented actor and technician.
