2018-19 Theatre Season Announced

05/02/2018

Another theatre season come and gone, and we here in the SAU Theatre Department are both sad but admittedly relieved, because we are now forced to focus on all of the classroom assignments we may or may not have been putting off while opening the spring production.

Cabaret has come to a close, and it was very well-received. It was also controversial in some aspects, something we at SAU Theatre do not shy away from when the power of the production is strong. The closing of our final production of the year leads us to discuss an exciting development: Next year's season!

The first show of the year will be directed by sophomore Jessica Karolczak in the studio theatre. The production will be Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, and no, it is not about Alice in Wonderland. This play centers on a family and the loss of their child; an irresponsible sister who is very pregnant; and their mother, who lost a son to suicide.

2018-19 Productions

This fall, come see "Rabbit Hole," "Pig Male Ian," and "Honk, Jr." Next spring, we'll bring you "Speech & Debate" and "Tartuffe."

The first main stage production of the year will be an original musical by SAU alum Aaron Randolph III, directed by Dr. Cory Johnson. This semester, many students helped to come up with the idea for the play, currently titled Pig Male Ian, (a play on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, well known in its musical form as My Fair Lady). The show tackles political preferences, the role of gender in our society, and how we often refuse to listen to those with differing opinions than ours.

The children's show will be Honk! Jr., a fun musical based around the classic story of The Ugly Duckling. The SAU Theatre Department is happy to welcome back Andrea Moore who will be the director/choreographer for the show. You may have seen some of Moore's stunning choreography in our spring production of Cabaret. Tickets for this adorable musical are sure to go fast, so keep your eyes peeled for its arrival at the Galvin Fine Arts Center!

Next, TJ Green ‘20 will be directing Speech & Debate by Stephen Karam in the Studio Theatre. This play centers on a group of misfits who start a Speech and Debate team at their high school. The play deals with issues of homosexuality, religion, teen pregnancy, pedophilia, and many other difficult subjects, but also handles these subjects realistically and with a touch of much-needed humor.

Our last show will be a big period piece: Tartuffe by Moliere directed by Dr. Cory Johnson. Tartuffe was first performed in 1664 and has stood the test of time for its witty commentary on social class and religion. The story is centered around the title character Tartuffe, a "hypocrite" who weasels his way into a wealthy family by pretending to be a priest. If you want to see gorgeously elaborate period costumes and hear dialogue to die for, this production is for you!

All in all, SAU Theatre is shaping up to have an incredibly diverse and exciting season for next year! We hope you all consider joining us for many different productions throughout the year.
